India is a leader in global milk production. While the demand for milk is increasing, rural areas still do not receive the same prices for milk as urban areas do. In the country’s total milk production, 37% is used for dairy processing, with 24% being utilized in the unorganized sector. There is significant potential to improve the quality of dairy products in this area.
In many districts, thousands of savings groups and various economic development groups are active. The distribution of cows and buffaloes through various schemes in several districts has led to increased milk production in some areas. During the “flush season,” when there is an abundance of milk, dairy farms often reject milk or offer very low prices. Given this situation, young groups and women’s savings groups in villages can come together to collect excess milk from local and nearby farmers and process it instead of selling it directly. This could lead to better prices. The only requirement is the integration of technology and the provision of clean, pure, high-quality dairy products.
